The best long-stay option for an engineer in Monterrey turns on one question: are they coming alone or with colleagues. Alone, a furnished apartment or an extended-stay property usually wins; in a group of two or three, a whole house changes the arithmetic.
If one person is coming for several weeks, an extended-stay property or a monthly furnished apartment usually wins: it costs less than booking a whole property and covers the essentials. If two or three colleagues are on the same assignment, a whole house normally works out better per person and works better day to day.
That is the dividing line, and it is worth stating before anything else. Everything below is why the line sits where it does.
An engineer on commissioning, a line startup or plant support follows a different pattern from a business traveller. The assignment is measured in weeks, not nights. Hours move with how the plant is running, not with a meeting calendar. And a good share of the day paperwork happens after the shift, back at the lodging.
That puts the weight on things a short hotel stay does not address: being able to eat without going back out after a late return, washing work clothes without depending on a laundry service, secure parking, and a bedroom of your own where rest is not shared.
Extended-stay or long-stay hotel: administratively the simplest, with housekeeping and a front desk, and usually the right answer for one person. Monthly furnished apartment: a good balance for one or two people, with a kitchen, though contracting timelines vary and straightforward invoicing is not guaranteed.
Whole house: wins with two or three people on the same assignment, because the cost splits and everyone gets their own bedroom. Direct lease: only makes sense over many months, since it involves a guarantor or legal policy, a deposit, and timelines a project assignment rarely has.
It fits the two-or-three configuration very well: three bedrooms, five beds and one bathroom means a room each and a bathroom that genuinely copes at that headcount. With a full kitchen, a washer, WiFi, a TV, free parking and self check-in, a multi-week assignment runs without depending on anyone else.
It does not fit if the person needs a formal workspace. There is no meeting room and no work desks, and we do not guarantee a connection speed: there is WiFi, but if the work depends on uploading heavy files or on critical video calls, that belongs at the plant or in an office, not here. It also does not fit one person travelling alone if cost is the only criterion.
On technical assignments the company almost always carries the expense, and the practical difference between options is what document you receive. We issue a CFDI, the Mexican tax invoice, to the entity deducting the expense, and on long stays it is worth deciding up front whether to invoice at the end or by period.
If the assignment extends, which is normal in commissioning, an extension is not automatic with a single property: raise it as soon as you suspect it, not once the booking has run out. That is the difference between staying put and moving mid-project.
